I am new to inventing

Post  Beth Roberts on Mon 21 Feb 2011 - 18:37

I have only been dabbling in inventing for a few months now. I have been on EN and Inventor Spot, and seen some of the things that go on there. The UIA does such good work I hope this forum provides good information and little drama.

You came to the right place Beth! Welcome! Can you share a little about what you've been working on for ideas?

New to inventing also

Post  cheerful5 on Wed 14 Sep 2011 - 13:10

I am also new to inventing and have been approached by Davison Company about one of my ideas. I have started the first process with them and gave them $750 to start the patent search. Unfortunately I did not do my research first and I am now leary of continueing because they are asking for ALOT more money to build a prototype. I have a couple more invention ideas but now do not now where to go or what to do. Can anyone offer advice or help with where I get started without spending tons of money I don't have!
Thanks,
Colleen

Colleen

I suggest you RUN, don't walk in the opposite direction! Under the 1999 Inventor's Protection Act, invention promotion companies like Davison are required by law to disclose their success rate. In particular, they're required to report how many people have made more money than they ended up spending with them. You have to look REALLY hard on the Davison site to find it but when you do you'll see that number is a very small fraction of 1%! Here's the actual number direct from their site at this link:

http://www.davison.com/legal/aipa.html

"The total number of customers who have contracted with Davison in the past five years is fifty two thousand five hundred sixty one (52,561). The number of customers who received a net financial profit as a direct result of the company's services over the company's history, since 1989, is twenty five (25)."

By my reckoning that comes out to 0.048%!!

new inventor

Hi All,

I have also contacted some of those co. (including Davison) and they are very hard sell and I don't trust them--they just want your $. I have 3 solid ideas and am researching how to proceed. Should I develop prototypes? Ideally, I would like to share my idea with a co. and they pay me a decent share. For example, I looked at Quirky. com, and they only pay 35%. That seems too low. How should one proceed to get the invention out there and make some $? What is UIA's NYC location?
